Startup: how to discover America and become successful at home

For many years, the United States has been topping the world rankings with the best ecosystems for startups. The center of the world's venture industry is here, in Silicon Valley. New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago and other cities (where, by the way, UF Incubator has partners) are also well known startup hubs. So, the United States is the place for a young startup to look for investors and mentors to build a profitable business. However, such a business doesn’t have to be developed in the United States. It’s enough to have an American post address for successful work.

Why do startupers choose the United States to register a business?

Firstly, the United States has the most investment opportunities. This is where the well-known crowdfunding platforms Kickstarter and Indiegogo are located. You can attract significant investment with the help of venture funds (The National Venture Capital Association) and business angels (the most famous of them in the US are Brad Feld, Ron Conway and Mark Anderson).

Secondly, the US government actively supports startups and entrepreneurship at the legislative level. A separate SBA’s Office of Investment and Innovation grants access to external capital, research and development funds. It also implements a number of programs of financial and investment assistance to innovators.

Thirdly, launching the project in the US helps to enter the international market faster and, at the same time, allows the startup to remain a foreign business. In our case Ukrainian.

How to open a startup in the US?

Nowadays it can be done even online. When opening a startup in the United States, it’s enough to do three main points:

1. Register a company;

2. Get EIN (Employer Identification Number — tax identifier);

3. Open a bank account.

Startups can receive support for entering the American market in a number of business accelerators and incubators. In particular, UF Incubator is actively cooperating with the University of Georgia Technology Transfer Center, the University of Berkeley, the Bay Area NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps ™) project. So, even in Ukraine it’s quite possible to get the necessary support and mentoring support for the projects’ promotion in foreign markets and become a successful Ukrainian startup!
